Hiking

From Brokkestøylen you can do great hikes, but there are only some marked trails. The very child-friendly lysloipe trail (3km) starts here - it is a circular forest road which offers nice views on the local mountains. Families with young children might also want to hike to the top of the skislope and enjoy the marvelous view there (5km). Or go for a stroll to the quarry and pick beautiful stones. Need to get the children motivated? The sportsclub of Valle has posted a series of post-boxes on beautiful spots in Brokke where children can collect clips. A free map and clip-card van be obtained from us - children visiting 3 boxes get a free medal with Brokke logo!

From Brokkestøylen we also propose a very rewarding walk along the Faråni riverbed with its amazing canyons, potholes and waterfalls (6km). Another highlight is the mighty Løefjell with its 300m high cliff - there is a trail to the top. Fantastic view and on the way back you can pass by a waterfall (6km). If you are prepared to go off the beaten tracks, we have lots of other proposals for you!

Want to go further? A comprehensive network of marked footpaths exists in the Brokke mountains - the extended highlands of the Setesdal Vesthei nature reserve. You can walk in the mountains for days, or just take day trips. The Norwegian Trekking Association manages six cabins in the Brokke area. The distance between the cabins varies, but generally the walk from one cabin to the next takes about 3 to 6 hours. In most of the cabins you will find food supplies and you may meet other hikers in a cosy atmosphere! The cabins are always open in summer and you can pay for your stay in cash. Are you planning to visit more than 4 huts in the course of the year, you are served buying a 500kr membership in the organisation.

We propose the following trips with the DNT (see map):

1 - Øyuvsbu-Gaukhei-Ivlung (2-3days). Drive Brokke to parking Øyuvsbu along the Suleskarroad (15km). Day 1: Hiking via Øyuvsbu (30min), to Gaukhei (6hrs). Gaukhei is an especially nice serviced hut - in summer there is a cook serving tasty meals at affordable prices. Day 2: Rent canoes on the south shore of Monsvatn and padle north (5hrs). Leave the canoes on the north shore and hike to the wilderness camp of Brokkestøylen (1hrs). Day 3: Rent new canoes at the wilderness camp and padle north back to the Suleskarroad and your car (2hrs). This trip requires prior reservation at Brokkestøylen - here you will also get safety vests. Trip situable for adults in good physical condition. You might also consider a canoeing daytrip to the wilderness camp suitable for families (4hrs).

2 - Håhelleren (1day). Drive Brokke to east shore of Håhellervatn (18km). This cosy DNT hut lies at the foot of an exceptional cliff called Håhelleren. The cliff is overhanging and has been a refuge for people and lifestock since time immemorable. An old carriage road takes leads from the Suleskarroad - a very easy hours walk in beautiful surroundings - suitable families with small children (1hrs). Consider driving up the hydroelectric power dam of the Rosskreppfjorden upon return - great view over this huge mountain lake.

3 - Øyuvsbu-Håhelleren-Øyuvsbu (1day). Drive Brokke to parking Øyuvsbu (15km). Walk via Øyuvsbu (30min) to Håhelleren (2hrs) and return to the Suleskarroad over the first part of the path to Svartenut (1hrs). Walk over the Suleskarroad to your car (15min). Nice day hike suitable for families with children from 8 years and up.

4 - Svartenut-Bossbu-Stavskar (3-4days). Drive Brokke to parking Øyuvsbu (15km). Day 1: Walk through moderate terrain to Svartenut (5hrs). Day 2: The terrain gets rougher and leads to the heart of the wilderness. Beautiful scenery and good chances for reindeer. Arrival at Bossbu (3hrs). Day 3: Great trail to Stavskar (3hrs). Along the way, we suggest you make a small detour to the Svarvanuten (1377m) and enjoy the fantastic view over the mountains. Cosy little hut. Day 4: Hike out to Valle and order a taxi back to your car (3hrs).
